On 19th November, we will be presenting our findings on how the UK NZC Buildings Standard can be incorporated into developments and asset level decarbonisation strategies. The Standard will be instrumental in shaping the #netzerotransition of the #UKRealEstate sector and there are rewards for early action. To find out more register for our free webinar and panel discussion where we will discuss the various routes available to #propertydevelopers, #realestateinvestors, #lenders and #propertyowners. As a starter, here are just a few reasons why we think the standard will be instrumental in setting forth a definitive and robust route to net zero. ☀️ It provides a clear consistent definition and trajectories for Net Zero Carbon Buildings. 🏗️ It is informed by climate science and data from actual buildings and projects. 💡 Includes both operational and embodied carbon, adopts a whole life carbon approach. 📣 Prioritises eliminating the energy performance gap♻️ Prioritises reuse of existing buildings and assets 🌞 Acknowledges the role of buildings as energy generators and sets requirements for renewable energy generation 📈 Drives market transformation Frankie Demetriades, Rodrigo García Priego, Cameron Parker#UKNZCBS #CRElending #impactinvesting #Wholelifecarbon #embodiedcarbon

My initial read of the Standard certainly paved the way for questions and clarifications around existing buildings and retrofits.1. How can existing buildings recently retrofitted conform to the Standard? Will they need to be retrofitted again if they fail the metrics? 2. How can assets that are currently stranded and are planning retrofits to enhance their attractiveness confirm to the Standard? 3. By allowing two retrofit approaches, is the Standard incentivising asset owners to adopt the ‘one-go’ retrofit approach which encourage early action to stay within 2040 limits?Applying the Standard to some of our existing projects also throws open so many questions. New article from me on taking a retrofit first approach. My focus here is on the commercial sector. My argument is that while there is a lot of very positive activity in terms of retrofit across the commercial sector, there is still some way to go.I then go on to discuss costs and financing, and the data challenge/gap/opportunity...Note that the article is behind a paywall but you can sign up for a 3 month trial for free. And if you sign up, you can read my other articles.Comments are welcome. And as always, if you're interested in discussing your approach to ESG, do get in touch for an initial chat. 🔊"While the #builtenvironment accounts for around 40% of #globalemissions,27% directly comes from building operations, creating an acute urgency to tackle a building’s energy and #emissions."📄 While referencing the industry-first green building alliance featuring BRE, helping drive the$35 trillion in investmentsneeded by 2030, JLL discusses the evolution of green building certifications. With an ever-growing focus on how best to achieve net zero and improve energy efficiency, there is mounting recognition of the impact of the built environment on carbon emissions, not just at the initial build stage but throughout an asset’s life cycle. In this article, our real estate team explores the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Whole Life Carbon Assessment, which seeks to achieve a consistent global approach to measuring the carbon impact of built assets.Read our article here: https://lnkd.in/gtDnk7ma#RealEstate #ESG #Sustainability #Carbon #NetZero #EnergyEfficiency

Investing in low-carbon buildings doesn't just make environmental sense, it's good business sense. For businesses looking to cut costs in the long term, taking action to decarbonize now will make it easier to not only meet Net Zero targets, but save big on energy costs. The biggest hurdle here will be overcoming the initial financial hurdle of retrofitting existing buildings. Public/private partnerships will be vital here.#Decarbonization #NetZero #FutureOfCities

A very useful article here from my colleagues Karen Scanna, Emilio Gómez Delgado, Sabine Reimann, Maria Deledda and Giorgio Perretti, looking at the varying approaches taken to improving the energy performance of buildings in Spain, Germany, Italy, the US and the UK. It is really interesting to see how different jurisdictions try to achieve the ambitious and crucial goal of improving energy efficiency and achieving net zero. Will sanctions, or incentives and subsidies, prove to be the more effective?#esg #sustainability #energyperformance #crossborder
